Resource massage is a metaphor. Massage refers to something pleasant, something that feels fine. Here is not a massage with hands but with caring words. The rule is to talk about the person only in positive terms based on observed facts about his/her behaviour, attitude, or what you know he/she, or what this person inspires: e.g.: ”he/she seems very organized. He/she always has something to write with, ready to help someone who has nothing planned”. “He/she always seems to be happy to be here because he/she always arrives a little early and always smiles” This exercise is to be proposed to an already constituted group, if you feel that the participants are not all in a collaborative process.

Aim / Benefits

Promote a cooperative alliance in the group between the participants and with the facilitator, create a positive identity, strengthen confidence in oneself and in others. How?
·       This exercise aims to highlight each person's positive points as seen by the other members of the group to create a sense of self-worth.
·       each one discovers the portrait that he gives but also the one carried on the others, questioning his/her glance on the group.

UNIT(s) related

  • UNIT 1: This exercise can be related to Unit 1 which is focused on the foundations of ACS. It highlights what is already working for clients: assets, strengths rather than what doesn't work. FSA aims to guide young people towards alternative narratives about themselves, to perceive their resources to solve their problems,
  • UNIT 3: This exercise can be related to this Unit which focuses on how to build relationships that create a useful framework for clients to safely develop their abilities. In this exercise the young person will discover his/her strengths through the eyes of others. And he/she may review the way he used to look at each of the other participants. The caring and supportive role of the facilitator is to create a positive group identity to promote the level of motivation of all in the group.
  • UNIT 4: It ‘s related to this Unit which is focused on the beneficial effects of group work. It aims to create a culture of positive and supportive interpersonal communication among members to foster a collaborative mindset.
  • UNIT 5: It’s related to this Unit because create a cooperative relationship with clients requires deconstructing one's way of thinking, one's way of listening, which is conducive to changing one's views and preconceived ideas.

How to do the exercise

Step 1 / Preparation:
Explain the exercise to the group, in the most fun way possible.
“Today we are going to do massages”. We can guess the surprise of participants. So we can ask:
“Do you like massages? Why do you like it?”. The goal is to see if the word "massage" is associated with something pleasant.
Then you explain that they are going to practise massages not with hands and essential oils but with caring words: The participants will form groups of 3 or 4 people.
In turn, one person will have his/her back turned while the others will express the qualities, resources and attitudes that they perceive about him/her, based on observed facts.

The instruction is to talk only about the positive points.

Step 2 / Exercise in group. 10 mn for each participant

Step 3 / Back to the group for debrief…

Debrief

Will focus on the 2 questions:

"How will you see that this exercise has changed anything for you?"
"How will you see this exercise as having made a difference to the group?

Specific materials

Tips and Tricks

It is important to respect the staging of the massage where the earner presents his/her back so that no mimicry or look interferes with the exchange.
